My story

A 16-year-old boy chasing his dream after the loss his dad

Hi, my name is Jay Lam, and I’m a 16-year-old with a deep passion for videography. Two years ago, I lost my dad to lung cancer. At the time, my mom and I had only been in Canada for about a year, having just immigrated in search of a better life. Since then, life has been a challenge—especially financially.

Photography has become more than just a hobby for me. It’s how I process grief, express myself, and find peace in the little things. Most importantly, it allows me to capture precious moments and hold onto a sense of gratitude. Even without proper camera gear, I’ve done my best using an old Olympus EP1 with a scratched shutter and my mom’s nearly 10-year-old Canon Powershot G3X.

It’s been difficult to grow and learn with limited tools, which is why I’m hoping to raise funds for an entry-level camera setup to help me take the next step in my journey. Every bit of support brings me closer to capturing the world through my lens—and to turning this passion into a future.

I plan to use the funds to purchase a reasonably priced second-hand Cinematic Camera or hybrid with gear, along with two lenses and essentials like an extra battery and a microphone for recording videos.

As a thank-you, contributors will get access to a downloadable photo and video gallery of my work. Once I receive the gear, I will provide weekly updates and continue sharing my progress with everyone who supports me. Your support truly means the world.
